Take a Breath and Organize Your Signals

The pace that A.I. is evolving is one thing. The pace of the hype is another. Each day it seems like there are announcements about one organization outpacing the other. If you feel behind, take a breath. Yes, there is a massive land grab going on. Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft and others are all trying to get to full intelligence first. It’s an exciting time.

But actually, what most of us need to do, as business owners, marketers, researchers, engineers and students, is to get organized. We are used to A.I. sort of helping us with things, and dependent on algorithms to work for us.

Now, the landscape is changing. Today, most of us should first get our data and signals organized.

What does this mean?

1. Look at the basics of any advertising campaigns you are running. If you are spending money on ads but don’t have your analytics, goals, events and funnels clearly defined, it’s not going to work for long. The machines need this data.

2. Look at your processes. Roles that involve humans staring at a screen, formatting data, inputting records, creating content and tracking stats will be over soon. In 2 years or less any intern with ChatGPT will be able to do many of these jobs.

3. What type of data advantages do you have? Do you have more data? More people? More users? Better data? You’ll need at least one data advantage.

4. Make a list of all of the algorithms you and your teams interact with daily. Which could impact your organization? These interactions, and the net impact of them are valuable.

This all may sound a little vague, but actually rather than generating A.I. images or asking ChatGPT questions, your organization needs to be thinking about the data and signals that inform the machines in your ecosystem.

Google I/0 2024 Recap

Machine Learning has driven SEO for years. Above: Google's Page Rank Algorithm

The theme was A.I. of course as the race is on. But there are some gems in here.

-Fully functional A.I. that can read code
-Generative Images and Videos will help scale the ads business
-Integration of A.I. across all Google products

A.I., specifically Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro was the feature of the 2024 Google I/O Conference.

Gartner’s 2023 A.I. Hype Cycle

My LinkedIn profile is flooded with people creating A.I. generated images, and starting businesses around ChatGPT.

It’s very cool to see. Some of the images have left me scrolling for a while and I have even used ChatGPT to answer some technical questions or even to write a few blog posts.

These technologies stand to impact education, content creation and marketing for sure. They probably already are impacting our world more than we realize.

But the money and real usefulness of A.I. has very little to do with chat bots and cool imagery.

Data is the new oil.

Data drives intelligent applications, and automation. Messy, unorganized data makes A.I. nearly impossibly, as does having too much data or too little context.

The business opportunity in 2023 is primarily around data manipulation, computer vision and automated systems.

Great job by Gartner is illustrating this. Don’t stop playing with cool robots or autonomous Chat, but it’s a while before these are truly impacting our industries.

Focus

When a new technology becomes popular, it experiences a flurry of innovation. Mainstream media and then social media (or vice versa) begins to cover the topic in length. This causes technologists and capitalists everywhere to scramble to develop new products, usually which are in line with the latest buzz.

These products never work other than capturing some of the market froth.

Instead of building a product around hype or buzz, focus your efforts on a specific problem you want to solve. Especially with vague topics such as Blockchain and A.I. – it’s important not to create a copycat product or to launch something that is 2% off the mark.

Create solutions to customer problems and leverage the technology of the day but be careful not to create buzz products.

Why We are Partnering with WinterWinds Robotics to Combat Wildfire

It’s a hot morning in Longmont, Colorado. Temperatures have been hovering above 100 degrees all week with no rain. Our little lab gets a lot of sun and the A/C units can barely keep up as our team works away on a variety of robotics and IoT projects around solar, traffic, assistive technology and AI development. After a long fire season last year way too close to home – it’s time to act.

At the core of Robauto’s mission is the goal to open up access to robotics and artificial intelligence. We want to extend these disruptive technologies to areas of society where they can be useful. Which is how we got into wildfire. I noticed today that the first fire(s) are being reported in Northwest Colorado – out near Steamboat Springs. This isn’t unusual in fact. It’s probably just getting started. The local fire departments will partner with state and national agencies to try to battle, contain and extinguish the fires as they pop up.

Last year was a record across the nation for wildfire, where more than 10,000 structures were destroyed and 4.2 million acres burned. The impacts are devastating for years. Fires are a natural part of the ecosystem – but not these massive, human-formed fires. These are very detrimental to the environment and our way of life.

A forest fire starts a chain reaction of ecological disasters that eventually leads to contaminated water, mudslides, aridity increase, and a range of human and wildlife impacts. As robotics engineers, the fact that robots are not more widely used is troubling and perplexing to us. We see options for use in firefighting, and some great R&D happening – but there isn’t much for real robotic mainstream wildfire solution. Yet this is a pressing issue, and very dangerous (and exhausting) for humans to manage alone.

That is why we’re excited to partner with WinterWinds Robotics to deploy their Earthling (TM) AMR robotic platform for wildfire mitigation and control. WinterWinds co-founder Caleb Eastman is a former firefighter, and knows all-too-well the long days and weeks, danger, and frustrating lack of tools and resources to fight large fires.

When he and his co-founder Valerie Eastman are not enjoying Colorado (they moved from a remote home lab near Red Feather Lakes to found WinterWinds in Longmont), they are working on robotics problems for some of the largest companies and government organizations in the world. The WinterWinds team are among the top robotics experts in the world, and Earthling’s brain (and core function) is very likely headed for other planets.

In the meantime: We’ll be working together to save this one. Through 2022 we’ll be refining, iterating and collaborating until Earthling is able to get out there with the crews, provide water, lighting, tactical info and even help dig trenches. The future is here – and humanity faces enormous challenges – but also has access to technology that has until now never been feasible.

Stay tuned for more progress and feel free to reach out if you’d like to get involved.

Note: Beginning July 1, a scale model Earthling will be on display at Robauto’s HQ at 251 Main Street in Longmont, CO. Interested in gaining experience as an Earthling volunteer? Email support@robauto.ai.

Misconceptions about Machine Learning

There is quite a bit of buzz about A.I. these days. At the core of A.I. is Machine Learning. But, let’s break that down a little bit.

A.I. – or Artificial Intelligence – refers to a computer taking input and making a decision. The way computers make decisions, can sometimes involve Machine Learning. These are algorithms that input and classify data. SEO is an example of a practical use of SEO. By me placing this link to my friend’s Jet Ski Rental company – he’ll start getting more traffic from Search Engines. My link informs the algorithm that his website is important.

In today’s environment Machine Learning isn’t usually the first step in technology development. Executives always want to make technology ‘smart’ and it can be a huge advantage. But it can also be costly and not output much if any revenue. Processing large amounts of data is expensive.

Getting Started with AWS IoT Core

Amazon is great a creating cloud product. For years we have used AWS for websites, databases, machine learning, application development, and more. We currently utilize AWS’s IoT Core framework which is a great way to get started managing multiple connected devices.

The way it works is elegant but also fairly simple:

-Install a certificate on your device
-Device pings data to an AWS server
-You can route the data to a variety of services, or process it via a Lambda
-Security and device management is set up for you so that you can work on your hardware and software!

Your Business Won’t Survive – Without Automation & Intelligence

Above: Robauto built systems and technology for – KrystalKlean.com – helping them grow from a family owned window cleaning company to the leading building care company in the Southeast.

There used to be a time when you could build a business with a rolodex. I still have an actual rolodex, which I have not looked at in years. It seems – and is – an archaic practice. While relationships still do matter, they cultivate in a different way now. Especially in the year 20https://www.acecashhomebuyer.com/20, we need automation. Digital. Smart business.

Data can help determine business trends. What business will you start in 2020? McDonald’s exec used real estate data to launch AceCashHomeBuyer.com, which provides easy and fair cash offers for homeowners to get out of mortgages. His experience selecting sites for future McDonalds, combined with automation and market data allows for efficient deal flow, giving Asa a significant advantage over competitors.

The automation and intelligence can go on and on. And it will. Many of the systems we work on are very complex.

But they are all the same: a data-centric strategy combined with seamless and smart tech. It’s time to get your businesses automated, streamlined and working for you.
