Teachers Got 49 Minutes Back a Week With AI Lesson Plans

An independent EEF trial of Oak's Aila found primary teachers cut lesson prep by about a quarter without lower quality — and early-career teachers gained the most.

Lesson planning eats evenings. An independent randomized trial just put a hard number on what a curriculum-aligned AI assistant can give back: about 49 minutes a week, with lesson quality that held steady under expert review.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) published results on 6 October 2026 for Oak National Academy's AI lesson assistant, Aila. Researchers at the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) ran a Teacher Choices trial with 464 teachers across 108 schools during Autumn 2025. Teachers who used Aila spent roughly two and a half hours a week on lesson and resource prep, versus three hours and 19 minutes in the comparison group — a cut of about 24% (they spent 76% as much time as peers not assigned to Aila).

That is the kind of quiet win AI is starting to deliver: not a viral demo, but minutes returned to people who already work hard.

What the trial actually measured

Aila is built for planning from scratch. A teacher picks year group, subject, and topic; the tool suggests a National Curriculum learning objective and activities; the teacher then refines the plan with Aila or offline. The trial focused on Key Stage 2 teachers (ages seven to eleven). Usage was tracked through weekly diaries, interviews, and school visits. One arm was encouraged to use Aila; the comparison arm was told not to use Aila, though those teachers could still use other AI tools.

Independent assessment found materials from the Aila group were no worse in quality than materials from teachers not assigned to the tool. The EEF gave the evaluation a high security rating — its strongest confidence band for how the study was designed and delivered.

A few details keep the story honest, and still hopeful:

Oak's CEO, John Roberts, has been open that earlier internal surveys suggested larger savings than the independent trial found. That gap is useful: testimonials are not enough, and gold-standard RCTs keep the sector honest while products improve. Oak has said it is folding Aila's capabilities into existing lessons so teachers can adapt materials rather than only build from scratch.

This is the second strong EEF signal on AI and prep time

In December 2024, a separate EEF/NFER Teacher Choices trial tested ChatGPT for Key Stage 3 science lesson prep. Across 259 teachers in 68 schools, teachers using ChatGPT spent 69% of the prep time of a non-GenAI comparison group in weeks six to ten — about 56.2 minutes versus 81.5 minutes per week, a saving of roughly 25.3 minutes. Expert reviewers did not find lower quality in ChatGPT-supported resources. That trial also carried a high security rating, and use was often modest (sometimes one activity per lesson).

Put the two trials side by side and a pattern emerges: when teachers stay in the loop, generative AI can shrink planning load without an automatic quality collapse — and the biggest help often lands with people who need a strong first draft most.

What brands can learn from teachers who kept quality

Classrooms and commerce look different, but the operating lesson travels. Tools that meet people where they already work get used. Tools that force a from-scratch workflow get abandoned when good drafts already exist. The EEF's own takeaway is blunt: providing a tool is not the same as sustained adoption.

For brands, AI agents are the new "early-career teacher" in your funnel. They arrive without your institutional memory. They need clear objectives, structured product facts, policies that parse, and paths that do not dead-end on a blocked crawl. Across Robauto's public network snapshot around this writing, AI agents accounted for about 29.3% of tracked page views over 90 days — hundreds of thousands of agent visits looking for usable answers. The public Agent Readiness Index still shows a median score of 20 (79 scored sites in the latest run), which means most sites leave a lot of structured signal on the table.

Robauto's practical takeaway for brands: treat agent readiness the way Oak is treating Aila — meet the helper where work already happens. Publish machine-readable policies and contacts, keep product and return facts consistent, and make your site easy for agents to read and act on. That is how you turn "we have an AI strategy" into minutes and margin returned to real customers.

A constructive next step

Teachers did not need a silver bullet. They needed a first draft that respected the curriculum, then human judgment on the finish. Brands do not need a silver bullet either. They need pages agents can trust.
