Small Businesses Using AI Every Day Are Growing Almost Twice as Often

Four fall 2026 surveys agree: small businesses that use AI regularly are more likely to grow revenue, hire, and stay optimistic. Here are the numbers and how to make your business easy for AI to recommend.

Here is some genuinely good news for Main Street: across four big surveys published this fall, small businesses that use AI regularly are more likely to be growing, hiring, and feeling confident about next year. The gains are not magic, and the researchers are careful to say these are associations, not proof that AI alone caused the growth. But the pattern is consistent, and it points to a clear opportunity for owners who are still on the fence.

The headline: frequent AI users grew almost twice as often

In its October 2026 SMB Growth Monitor, PYMNTS Intelligence surveyed 533 U.S. small and mid-sized businesses in August 2026. Among frequent AI users, 68% reported revenue growth in 2025, compared with 43% of occasional users and 37% of businesses that use AI rarely or never. Revenue declines were also far less common for regular users: 8.7% of frequent users and 9.6% of occasional users reported a drop, versus 21% of rare or never users.

The same report found that 74% of SMBs now use AI at least occasionally, 72% of AI users say they get work done faster, and six in ten say they can produce more work without adding staff. The most common uses are everyday jobs that small teams juggle: customer service and calls (58%), marketing and advertising (55%), bookkeeping and tax (54%), and sales (53%).

AI is helping owners take on more, not just cut costs

One of the most encouraging details in the PYMNTS data is what AI is doing to hiring. Firms were about four times as likely to skip a hire as to lay someone off, and only 3.3% of AI users reported a layoff because of AI. Roughly three quarters of AI-using businesses did not scale back human work at all. And 45% of AI users said they can now take on work they could not handle before.

There is even a new kind of demand for people: 23% of SMBs said they gained customers who specifically wanted a person doing the work, and 14% now get paid to fix AI-generated output.

The U.S. Chamber sees AI as a job engine

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's 2026 Empowering Small Business report, published October 2, 2026, found that two thirds of small businesses (66%) now use AI, up 8 points from 2025 and nearly three times the 23% share in 2023. Small businesses using AI were at least 7 points more likely to report growth in sales, profit, and workforce than those that do not.

The Chamber also found that 47% of small businesses say AI is creating jobs today, compared with 6% who say it is enabling headcount reductions. And 95% of small businesses using AI are working to upskill their employees, including 47% offering on-the-job training. AI has become part of how these firms run: 78% of users said limiting access would slow their growth.

Revenue winners outnumber losers more than 20 to 1

Intuit's 2026 AI Impact Report draws on surveys of 12,742 small and mid-sized businesses commissioned between April 2025 and January 2026. In the U.S., 43% of AI-using businesses said in January 2026 that AI had increased their revenue, while only 2% said it had decreased it. Across the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Australia, fewer than 5% said AI had been a drag on revenue, and that gap held steady every quarter since April 2025.

The New York Fed: optimism holds up under scrutiny

Self-reported surveys can reflect optimistic owners, so researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York tested that. In an October 8, 2026 Liberty Street Economics post, Will Aarons and Asani Sarkar analyzed the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey. Among employer firms using AI, the share expecting revenue to rise beat the share expecting a fall by 48 percentage points, compared with 21 points for non-users.

After accounting for firm and owner characteristics and past revenue changes, AI users still had a 14 percentage point advantage in net expected revenue growth. The gap was even larger for owners in fair or poor financial condition (24 points), and AI users who face technology challenges with their website, social media, or ecommerce had a 16 point higher net expectation of revenue growth. The authors suggest AI may be helping smaller firms get past the technical hurdles that hold them back. They also note that whether these firms actually hit those expectations is a question for future research.

What owners who are winning have in common

The clearest lesson from PYMNTS is that trying AI is not the same as using it. Growing and flat-revenue businesses had tried AI at about the same rate, close to nine in ten, but 57% of growing businesses use it frequently, versus 29% of flat ones. Regular use, in practical everyday jobs like answering customers, marketing, and bookkeeping, is where the difference shows up.

The New York Fed finding adds a hopeful twist: the firms with the most to gain may be the ones that struggle most with their website and online presence today. That is exactly the area where a few small fixes can go a long way.

The Robauto takeaway: let AI find and use your business too

AI is not only a tool small businesses use internally. More and more customers now ask AI assistants which shop to call, which plumber is open, or where to buy a gift. A small business that is easy for AI agents to read and understand gets a fair shot at those recommendations, often against much bigger competitors. A few practical steps:

1. Say what you do in plain words. Put your services, service area, hours, and prices or price ranges in clear text on your pages, not only inside images.

2. Make policies easy to find. Clear shipping, refund, and contact pages help both people and AI assistants answer customer questions about you accurately.

3. Add structured data. Schema.org markup for your business, products, and FAQs gives AI systems clean facts to work from.

4. Check how agents see you. A quick scan shows what an AI agent can and cannot read on your site, so you can fix the gaps first.
