New hospital studies show delivery robots cutting ICU errand time 81.6%, saving the work of about two staff in an endoscopy unit, and lifting nurse satisfaction. Here's why it works and what it means for brands and AI agents.

Ask nurses what they need most and the answer is usually the same: more time with patients. In one survey of 18,000 U.S. nurses, two-thirds said they didn't have enough of it ([Nursing CE Central](https://nursingcecentral.com/youve-got-moxi-hospitals-hire-robots-to-help-nurses/)). Now a growing stack of hospital studies shows a practical way to give some of that time back: let robots handle the walking, fetching, and delivering, so people can stay at the bedside.

This isn't a story about robots replacing nurses. It's about robots taking the errands nobody went to nursing school for.

## **An ICU cut its errand time by more than 80%**

Researchers studying an intensive care unit at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan compared ordinary manual supply runs with a robot-assisted model for moving linens, medications, and consumables. The results, presented at ISPOR 2026, are striking: nurses' active logistics time fell from 111.34 minutes a day to 20.43 minutes, an 81.6% drop. That works out to roughly 553 nursing hours freed up each year, and 1,505 fewer meters of walking every day ([ISPOR 2026](https://www.ispor.org/heor-resources/presentations-database/presentation-cti/ispor-2026/poster-session-1-4/cost-effectiveness-of-an-automated-delivery-robot-program-to-reduce-nursing-transport-burden-in-an-intensive-care-unit-a-hospital-provider-perspective)).

The authors were honest about the price tag: the cost per nursing hour saved came out higher than prevailing wage rates. But their conclusion still points somewhere hopeful. The program "substantially reduced nursing transport workload and physical burden," and could help shift nursing time toward direct patient care and support a more sustainable workforce ([ISPOR 2026](https://www.ispor.org/heor-resources/presentations-database/presentation-cti/ispor-2026/poster-session-1-4/cost-effectiveness-of-an-automated-delivery-robot-program-to-reduce-nursing-transport-burden-in-an-intensive-care-unit-a-hospital-provider-perspective)).

## **Ten robots, faster deliveries, and happier staff and patients**

A six-month parallel-controlled study published in _Scientific Reports_ in 2026 tested a fleet of 10 autonomous mobile robots delivering drugs and specimens at a tertiary hospital from June through November 2025. Compared with manual delivery, the robots were 32% to 36% faster on key routes, hit 100% verification accuracy and item integrity, and had a significantly lower omission rate. The 10-robot fleet completed 7.3 times more delivery trips than 19 manual workers over the same six months ([Scientific Reports](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-49800-9)).

The part worth underlining: both nurse and patient satisfaction were significantly higher in the robot group. Over a 10-year lifecycle, the researchers estimated the system would save 6.928 million RMB, and their sensitivity analysis held up ([Scientific Reports](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-49800-9)).

## **In the endoscopy unit, robots saved the work of about two full-time people**

At Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, a prospective comparative trial put eight autonomous mobile robots to work distributing and collecting endoscopes across 18 procedure rooms. On four days a week the robots did the transport; on one randomly chosen day, people did it by hand. Across 26,441 deliveries, the robots cut transport workload by 2.18 full-time equivalents. Average distribution time dropped from about 168 seconds to 112, and retrieval from about 91 seconds to 70 ([Gastrointestinal Endoscopy](https://www.giejournal.org/article/S0016-5107(25)02075-9/abstract)).

The delivery failure rate was 0.15%, the estimated return on investment was about 12.8%, and nurses reported lower work intensity and higher job satisfaction ([Gastrointestinal Endoscopy](https://www.giejournal.org/article/S0016-5107(25)02075-9/abstract)). An accompanying editorial noted that the results suggest automation may be linked to less burnout among endoscopy staff, while flagging fair limits: it was a new, spacious unit built with dedicated pathways and digital infrastructure, and loading and unloading scopes still depended on people ([Gastrointestinal Endoscopy editorial](https://www.giejournal.org/article/S0016-5107(25)02196-0/fulltext)).

## **U.S. hospitals saw the same pattern early**

The idea isn't new in American hospitals either. Diligent Robotics' Moxi robot made 7,298 deliveries at Edward Hospital between August 2022 and March 2023, saving clinical staff 4,125.5 hours. At Elmhurst Hospital, Moxi made 9,813 deliveries and saved 5,345 hours from June 2022 to March 2023. Together, that's close to 9,500 hours of shift time handed back to nurses at two Illinois hospitals ([Nursing CE Central](https://nursingcecentral.com/youve-got-moxi-hospitals-hire-robots-to-help-nurses/)).

## **Why it works: the robots were given a clear map**

Read these studies closely and a common thread shows up. The robots succeed on well-defined jobs in environments that have been made legible to them. The Scientific Reports fleet relied on planned global routes, local navigation, and a coordination model for multiple robots, plus verification at each handoff ([Scientific Reports](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-49800-9)). The endoscopy unit had dedicated pathways and digital infrastructure built for automation ([GIE editorial](https://www.giejournal.org/article/S0016-5107(25)02196-0/fulltext)). Where things were clear and structured, the robots delivered. Where a step still needed judgment or hands, people kept it.

That's the healthiest version of human-AI teamwork: machines take the repetitive legwork, and people spend their time on the work that needs a person.

## **The Robauto takeaway: make your brand easy for AI agents to navigate**

The same lesson applies online. AI agents are now running errands for shoppers: comparing products, checking return policies, and finding the right contact or checkout path. Like a hospital robot, an agent does its best work when the route is clear. Brands that publish plain, structured facts about their products, prices, policies, and support give agents a reliable map, and that makes it easier for those agents to recommend them and complete the job.

A few practical moves that help:

- Put shipping, returns, and refund terms on clear, crawlable pages instead of only in PDFs or pop-ups.

- Use structured data (schema.org) for products, organization details, and FAQs.

- Keep one consistent, easy-to-find contact and support path.

- Make sure key pages load without heavy scripts that block automated readers.
