# AI Assistants Send Fewer Visitors, but Those Visitors Are Ready to Buy

New 2026 studies show AI-referred visitors convert as well as or better than organic search on most sites, and 49% of ChatGPT-referred calls are qualified leads. Here's what that means for small businesses.

New 2026 studies show AI-referred visitors convert as well as or better than organic search on most sites, and 49% of ChatGPT-referred calls are qualified leads. Here's what that means for small businesses.

Here's some genuinely good news for small businesses and brands trying to make sense of AI search: the people who arrive from AI assistants tend to be ready to act. Several large studies published between July and October 2026 point the same way. AI assistants still send far fewer visitors than Google, but those visitors convert at equal or better rates on most sites, and when they pick up the phone, they're more likely to be real leads than callers from any other channel measured.

That's not a reason to abandon search engine optimization. It's a reason to make sure that when an assistant does recommend you, the visit pays off. Here's what the new data says, in plain terms.

## **The headline: small channel, high intent**

In October, [Search Engine Land reported](https://searchengineland.com/chatgpt-sends-less-than-googles-traffic-497705) on Marie Haynes' analysis of 12 months of Google Analytics 4 data from 100 websites and more than 145 million sessions. ChatGPT drove just 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search, and all AI assistants together reached 0.73% of Google organic sessions. But among the 55 sites that tracked conversions, 13.8% of ChatGPT visitors converted, compared with 3.02% of Google organic visitors.

Haynes was candid about the other side: Google organic still drove 27 times as many conversions as all AI assistants combined. Her line was that "the AI search that is actually sending people to businesses today isn't ChatGPT. It's Google." Both things are true at once, and that's the useful part. AI search is a small, efficient channel sitting on top of the big one.

### **A second benchmark backs it up, more modestly**

A [12-month benchmark from SEO Works](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23040387), published September 29, 2026, looked at 95 websites from September 2025 to August 2026. Organic search sent 39 times more sessions than AI assistants (2,825,594 versus 72,095). Yet AI sessions converted at 7.18% versus 6.08% for organic, about 1.18 times as well. The edge was biggest for consumer businesses (1.51 times) and mixed businesses (1.46 times), positive for business-to-business services (1.21 times), and lower for business-to-business product sites (0.62 times).

One more encouraging detail from that study: AI referral volume rose 36% to 39% across customer segments after ChatGPT began showing brands as clickable inline links in May 2026. When assistants make it easy to click through to a business, people do.

### **Most sites see AI visitors hold their own**

A [Forbes Agency Council piece](https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbesagencycouncil/2026/10/09/ai-search-may-send-less-traffic-but-are-the-leads-better/) from October 9 summarized Siege Media's look at 78 websites with enough AI referral and conversion data. AI-referred visitors converted at a median 1.26 times the rate of organic traffic, and AI matched or outperformed organic on 72% of the sites studied.

## **The phone tells the clearest story**

For local and service businesses, the strongest signal comes from phone calls. The [Invoca Lead Conversion Benchmarks Report 2026](https://www.invoca.com/press-release/new-invoca-data-finds-the-best-leads-now-start-in-chatgpt), released July 13, analyzed 70 million voice and SMS conversations across 10 industries, including healthcare, home services, financial services, telecom and automotive. Calls referred by ChatGPT had a 49% lead rate, the highest of the seven channels measured and roughly 10 points above the cross-channel average.

Invoca also found that 41% of consumers research major purchases with generative AI. Its explanation is simple: someone who uses an assistant to compare options and then calls is already deep in their buying journey. The report is just as honest about scale. AI call volume is still low, and ChatGPT was the only assistant with measurable volume, so Invoca calls it "a signal worth watching closely."

The studies disagree on how big the edge is, partly because they define conversions differently. Google organic converted at 3.02% in one dataset and 6.08% in another. What they agree on is the direction: on most sites, a visitor sent by an AI assistant is at least as valuable as one sent by a search engine, and often more.

## **Why AI visitors arrive ready**

When someone asks an assistant "who's a good plumber near me" or "which running shoe is best for flat feet," the assistant does the comparison shopping first. By the time the person clicks or calls, they've already heard why your business fits. That's a real advantage for smaller brands with a clear specialty, because a well-described niche page can earn a recommendation that would never reach page one of a traditional results list.

The flip side is that the assistant has to understand you first. It needs to find your services, locations, hours, prices and policies in a form it can read, and trust them enough to repeat them.

## **What we see across the Robauto network**

Across the sites on the [Robauto network](https://robauto.ai/ai-search-data), 32.12% of the 1,685,825 page views in the last 90 days came from AI agents and crawlers, as of October 29, 2026. Agents are already reading these sites at scale. In our most recent readiness index run, the median scored site landed at 20 out of 100, while the best reached 75. That gap is the opportunity: most sites are being read by agents but aren't yet set up to be easily understood and recommended.

## **The practical takeaway for brands**

You don't need to shift your budget away from what works. The studies suggest a small, high-value layer on top of good search basics:

- **Keep the basics strong.** The SEO Works study found AI referral growth tracked organic growth, and a 5% improvement in organic performance would add more conversions than doubling AI referrals.

- **Make your key facts machine-readable.** Services, service areas, prices, hours, return and refund policies, and contact routes should be plain on the page and in structured data.

- **Give your specialty its own page.** Assistants answer specific questions. A clear page per service gives them something specific to cite.

- **Answer the phone.** Invoca found 44% of callers never reach a person. AI-referred callers are your warmest leads, so make sure someone picks up.

- **Measure it.** Set up an AI-assistant channel group in your analytics and ask new customers how they heard about you.
