Brands Backed by Their Own Site and Two Others Kept 77% of Their AI Answer Spots

Robauto Team · Published · Last updated

New AirOps, Ahrefs and Ranking Atlas data show AI answers stick with well-supported brands: 77.2% stayed named for nine months when their own site plus two others were cited, and small-site mentions count too.

Here's some genuinely good news for brands trying to show up in AI answers: once ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google AI Mode starts recommending you, that spot tends to stick, especially when your own website and a couple of other sites back you up. Three new studies published between late October and early November 2026 point the same way. AI engines behave less like a slot machine and more like a well-read friend who remembers who earned a recommendation.

That turns AI search from something that feels random into something you can actually build. Here's what the research found and what it means for your site.

Well-backed brands kept their place for nine months

AirOps followed hundreds of thousands of the same buyer questions and tens of millions of AI answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode from January to September 2026, and published the results on November 2 (AirOps report). For every brand named in a January answer, the team checked whether the September answer to the same question still named it.

The deciding factor was the evidence behind the recommendation. When the January answer cited the brand's own site plus two or more other sites that named the brand, 77.2% of those brands were still named in September. When none of the cited pages named the brand, only 40.7% were. That's a 36-point gap over nine months.

Leaders held on too. On 62.8% of questions, the brand named most in January and February was still named most in September. By chance alone you'd expect that only 14.9% of the time.

AirOps is upfront that it sells AI search services, so the "start now" framing is close to home for them. The stability numbers are still useful on their own: they show the effort you put in keeps paying off for months instead of resetting every week.

Evergreen pages do the heavy lifting

Most of what AI engines cite is older third-party content. In the AirOps data, 75.2% of the most-cited Reddit threads and 70.3% of the most-cited YouTube videos were more than six months old. A Reddit thread more than two years old was cited again for the same question four weeks later 25.8% of the time, compared with 13.1% for a thread less than a month old. A helpful review, guide, or community answer written today can keep working for your brand long after it's posted.

Being talked about widely helps, and small sites count too

Ahrefs published a separate study in November that compared 10,000 US brands against 260 million non-branded prompts across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews (Ahrefs study). Every type of off-site mention it measured lined up strongly with how often a brand appears in AI answers.

Mention type (Ahrefs)Correlation with AI mentionsSource
Reddit threads that rank in Google0.75Ahrefs
Webpage mentions0.70Ahrefs
Traffic of the pages mentioning you0.70Ahrefs
News article mentions0.67Ahrefs
YouTube mentions0.64Ahrefs
TikTok mentions0.60Ahrefs

The encouraging part for smaller brands: a mention on a quiet, low-traffic page appeared to count about as much as one on a busy page, since raw webpage mentions and traffic-weighted mentions both scored 0.70. Press coverage (0.67) didn't beat everyday web mentions either. Ahrefs suggests that pitching small, niche sites may earn as much AI visibility as landing a big publication.

The bar is also lower than many people assume. The typical brand in the study had just 8 Reddit threads mentioning it, and 29% had none at all. Ahrefs found that brands with 10 times more webpage mentions got about 3.7 times more AI mentions, and 10 times more Reddit mentions lined up with about 5.5 times more. These are correlations, not proof of cause, and Ahrefs says to expect progress over months rather than weeks.

Top-three brands have grown faster in branded search

A third paper connects AI recommendations to something brands already track: people searching for them by name. Ranking Atlas ran 280 brand-free category prompts six times each on five engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity) on October 23 and 24, 2026, collecting 8,190 answers covering 418 US brands (Ranking Atlas working paper).

The 68 brands placed in the top three grew their Google Ads branded search volume about 8.2 percentage points per year faster than the other 350 from October 2022 to September 2026, after controlling for category and starting volume. Google Trends gave a similar estimate of 7.9 points. Before ChatGPT launched, from 2015 to 2022, no such gap showed up. The author is careful to call this an association, not proof that AI rankings cause search growth, and the paper isn't peer reviewed. Still, it fits what marketers describe: people meet a brand in an AI answer, then go look it up.

What brands can do with this

Put the three studies together and the playbook is hopeful and practical. AI engines reward brands that are easy to find, easy to describe, and backed up by other people. That's work any business can start this week.

That last step is where Robauto helps. Being findable and usable by AI agents is the foundation the rest builds on. A site that agents can read, with clear policies and contact routes, gives every outside mention something solid to point back to.
