OpenAI + Oracle to Create 100,000 Jobs as Part of Stargate

From Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI:

Stargate, our $500 billion AI infrastructure project, is about more than data centers—it’s about building democratic AI rails that ensure AI benefits everyone, not just a select few. AI is the next great productivity engine, and we’re investing at historic scale to put AI’s power into the hands of as many people as possible.

Today, we’re taking another major step forward: an agreement with Oracle to build 4.5 GW of additional Stargate capacity, bringing the total data center capacity under development in the US to more than 5 GW. The project will create over 100,000 new jobs in construction and other industries, across construction, operations, and local industries—on top of the thousands of jobs already created at our Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas.

The new site is part of our broader plan to build 10 GW of AI infrastructure across the U.S. in the next four years. Thanks to strong momentum with partners like Oracle and SoftBank, we expect to exceed our initial financial and compute goals.

These investments help the US preserve its technological edge in AI and build a global system of democratic AI rails—an alternative to concentrated or authoritarian approaches that risk leaving too many people behind. They are designed to democratize AI’s economic benefits, ensuring that the productivity gains from this technology reach workers, communities, and countries everywhere.

We also can’t ignore the global stakes. These investments help ensure the US stays ahead of the Chinese Communist Party in the global AI race—strengthening American competitiveness while advancing democratic values.

Stargate’s progress has governments around the world asking how they can build Stargates of their own that are grounded in democratic AI rails rather than authoritarian models. That inbound demand is why we launched OpenAI for Countries, a new effort to help America’s friends and allies build advanced AI infrastructure and ensure their people benefit from AI-driven productivity gains. Our first agreement is with the United Arab Emirates, which will work with us to build world-class AI infrastructure in both the US and the UAE.

Here in the U.S., this new Oracle expansion is central to expanding our US infrastructure while we also accelerate work with SoftBank—advancing site assessments and reimagining data center design to power the next generation of advanced AI.

This is the future we want to build: one where AI supercharges productivity and growth, with benefits that reach as many people as possible.
